THE PHOTO STASH: NYC 2012

DSC_0024roughedit

Whenever I leave Houston, I have a camera around my neck at all times and the hunt is on. Yeah, I keep an eye out for some stylish folks here and there, but mostly I'm breaking the location down by rhythm, colors, lines, type, textures, etc. I need a lot of time alone just to observe, soak up, process and document my surroundings. When i get to a 'cool' part of town, I like to figure out why it's considered cool. The same goes for trashy, nice, hipster, rich (and so on) parts of towns.

A few months ago, I went to NYC with Roots The Salon and was on inspiration overload. I've been to NY a bunch since graduating high school, but I never have the same experience. I usually have a pretty tight schedule when I go and try to cram in everyone I know into the few days I have. This time I had plans fall through more than once, which gave me and the city some necessary time alone.

I always see people with cameras in their hands and wonder what their film/memory cards are full of, so that's why I'm sharing this post with you. These are the photos I take and store on my hard drive for inspiration. No one ever gets to see these because there's not much of anything going on. Not a beautiful, lanky goddess wearing the latest trends, or photos of me standing in front of notable NY things... just what is. I really enjoy type. Ugly type, pretty type, trends type, right down to handwriting. It's such a neat form of communication. With just a few lines, a mood is created. Pretty neat.

Anyway, I'll get on with the visuals...

Do you have a hidden stash of travel photos that don't get seen? If so, what are you photographing and why?

When I travel, I love taking photos of graffiti, of old signs, of the food I eat (of course!), of my views out of windows, and of my feet. I have hundreds of photos of my feet in the places they have taken me. :)

i have a stash of pictures from my 3 months in Japan in 2002 that i don't have sitting out for viewing pleasure and i only break out to look at about once a year. They're pictures of buildings, and people on the streets, but mainly they consist of photographs of the people that were with me on that 3 month adventure. Most pics are really random, and people would get bored with them, but for me they were capturing a feeling of a time in my life that i knew wouldn't last forever. When i do look at them, i can almost smell and taste japan, and i am overwhelmed with love for the group of friends that are now scattered all over the world!
thanks for sharing your pics, makes me want another adventure soon!

Thank you, Miki!

Zhar, I sure would love to see some of those photos. That's the kind of thing I'm interested in seeing!

Elisabeth, I've wanted so badly to go to Japan! and for 3 months?!? You are one lucky lady. I'm glad you documented the whole trip. Hearing about your trip and the sensations you are filled with when looking through the photos, make me want another adventure too! I hope you make it out on another adventure this year.

Besos,
K

We have a love for street and car art in the form of stencils, stickers & murals. We shared a two of our favorite pieces we've seen on our blog today. You kinda inspired us. Plus it was nice looking through old photos and getting re-inspired.

Thanks!
